At the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), they work within and beyond the disciplines of engineering and foundational science to address the most pressing issues of our time. SEAS has no departments; departments imply boundaries, even walls. Their approach to teaching and research is, by design, highly interdisciplinary.

Worth of Award
- All students admitted to their PhD programme receive full financial support.
- This support includes tuition, fees, and a cost-of-living stipend ($3161 per month before taxes in AY19-20).
Eligibility
- All PhD students are required to participate in the educational program for about ten hours a week for one term-usually as a quarter-time teaching fellow or in a similar capacity- during their second year of study.
- Financial support takes several forms: fellowships, teaching fellowships, and research assistantships. Ordinarily, first-year PhD students are supported with full fellowships so that they can devote all their time to coursework.
- Beyond the first year, when students are in a better position to teach and assist in research, support is ordinarily provided through research assistantships, or a combination of a teaching fellowship and a research assistantship.
- During the academic year, full-time students may not accept employment inside or outside the University, other than teaching fellowships or research assistantships that involves a commitment of more than ten hours per week, without special permission.
How to Apply
While there is no perfect set of criteria for admission, they especially look for candidates who,
- Have a strong interest in and great potential for undertaking research
- Have excellent grades, e.g., in the range of A to A- in their undergraduate (and if applicable, graduate) programs
- Have solid preparation in coursework and research experience (e.g., a strong plan of study at a respected university)
- Have solid letters of recommendation from distinguished faculty and mentors; the strongest letters speak specifically about the applicant’s aptitude for research
- All prospective graduate students to the PhD program apply to SEAS through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS).
- Applicants who wish to pursue a degree at the Graduate School must hold the equivalent of a US bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from an institution of recognized standing.
- Applicants from institutions outside of the US; applicants must hold the equivalent of US bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from institutions of recognized standing (either a three or four-year undergraduate degree)

- Transcripts uploaded to the application
- Letters of recommendation
- Statement of purpose
- GRE, where required
- Demonstration of English proficiency, where required
- Writing sample, where required
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences may request additional academic documents, as needed.
